Emergency Weather/ Snow Closure Policy

Our aim is to always keep the nursery school open. Unfortunately, an adverse weather forecast means we have to keep our plans under constant review.

We will only close the nursery school when:

  • It is deemed dangerous for children and staff to travel to the school
  • Access to the school is deemed dangerous
  • There is a risk of children and staff being stranded at the school

If possible, a risk assessment will be carried out. The final decision on whether to open or close the nursery will be taken by the manager.

Snow may limit access to the school but if the children and staff are able to get in then we will make every effort to stay open to receive them.

The condition of the roads and pavements outside the nursery school are not our responsibility but that of the Highways service.

  • We are permitted to clear the pathways directly outside the nursery building.
  • We recommend a staggered or delayed arrival and pick-up to aid safety.
  • Where possible parents/carers should (park and) walk.

In the event of heavy snowfall during the school day a decision will be taken by the manager whether the nursery should remain open, taking into account the safety of the children and staff.

The Beeches nursery sees snow as an opportunity for play and exploration. Please ensure that your child is suitably dressed for going outside during play time. We will only keep the children inside if conditions are unpleasant or unacceptably risky.

In the event of an extreme weather warning, we will advise and update parents/carers via email, the nursery website, a sign on the school door (if possible), a recorded message on the school answer phone (if possible). We are also looking at the possibility of information being relayed by a local radio station.
